Lanarkshire - A725 Blantyre, Major Roadworks from 9th May 2008
A725 Blantyre
HIGH BLANTYRE EAST & WEST BRIDGES REFURBISHMENT
A £450,000 bridge works project on the A725 near Blantyre (Whistleberry Industrial Estate) starts this weekend for five weeks, weather permitting. Road users are warned that delays are predicted in this area throughout the project.
Traffic will travel in contraflow on the Southbound carriageway for the first phase and will transfer to the Northbound carriageway for the second phase. The roundabout below the bridges (B7012) will close overnight at the weekends only and a clear diversion route will be in place.
Willie Watson, Amey’s unit manager for trunk routes in Southwest Scotland said:
"During the works waterproofing, resurfacing, replacing bridge deck joints, repainting the parapets and replacing bearings will take place on the north and southbound carriageways. The overall result will be easier to maintain bridges therefore reducing the frequency of repair work.
"Working on high-speed roads is challenging, therefore for everyone’s safety the speed limit through the site will reduce from 60mph to 40mph."
Amey, who are planning and managing the project on behalf of Transport Scotland, urge drivers to take a ‘Cone Sense, Common Sense’ approach to roadworks:
Keep to the speed limit, it has been implemented not just for driver safety but for workforce safety too – speeding vehicles are a serious threat to staff.
Concentrate on the road ahead, not just the roadworks.
Be alert for roadworks traffic and personnel leaving or entering the safety managed roadworks site.
Keep a safe distance – there could be queues in front.
Observe all signs – they are there to help you.
Get into the correct lane in good time – don’t keep switching.
Approximately 18,000 cars travel this route on a daily basis and, while steps have been taken to ensure road users are made aware of this project, drivers should consider public transport options by getting real-time journey planning advice at www.trafficscotland.org or www.travelinescotland.com.

A77 CLOSURE AT SHALLOCH PARK, WEEKEND BEGINNING FRIDAY 16th MAY
MAJOR DIVERSION IN PLACE
The A77 south of Girvan at Shalloch Park will be closed during the weekend of Friday 16th May, beginning at 7pm and finishing at 7pm on Sunday 18th May. Due to the narrowness of the road it must be completely closed to allow AMEY personnel to work safely. A clearly signed diversion via the A714, A75 and A751 will be in place while the work is carried out.
This particular stretch of the A77 carries over 2,500 vehicles daily with 16% being HGVs. However, with the holiday season approaching the volume of traffic may increase with golf enthusiasts and travel to caravan parks becoming more popular at this time of year.
Andy Smart, Amey’s route manager based at the Ayr depot explains:
"The road has become worn over time and now needs to be resurfaced. Over 500 metres of carriageway will be replaced to varying depths of between 4 and 20 centimetres. The diversion route in place is quite lengthy as there are limited roads available in the area. We urge all road users to ensure they leave plenty of time to reach their destination."
