Highland Region - A9 Kessock Bridge. Painting Works from 4th November 2008 until January 2009
KESSOCK BRIDGE - MAINTENANCE OF CABLE STAYS
Users of the A9 over Kessock Bridge will notice maintenance and painting works on the cable stays during November, December and January. The cables will be accessed by a specially designed cradle, supporting and enclosing the workforce while they clean the cables and apply paint.
This project, which will be managed by Scotland TranServ, will commence in early November.
The work will take approximately 4-5 weeks to complete on each side of the bridge and will require several off-peak nearside lane closures in each direction. The dates of these are variable as they depend upon the progress of work, governed by weather conditions.
For the safety of pedestrians and cyclists, the path and cycle ways beneath the painting works will be closed while painting is in progress. Diversions for pedestrians and cyclists will be clearly signed.
The approximate dates are as follows: Southbound side from 4th November until mid-December, followed by the northbound side from mid-December until mid to end of January.
Motorists should not be unduly affected by these works.
Wigtownshire - A77 Cairnryan. Road Lighting Works at Ferry Terminal from 15th December 2008 until 31st January 2009
A77 CAIRNRYAN - ROAD LIGHTING IMPROVEMENT PROJECT
Road users travelling on the A77 at Cairnryan will benefit from improved lighting to be installed from 100 metres north of the P & O Ferry Terminal entrance to the terminal South Gateway on the A77.
The £50k project begins on 15th December 2008 until breaking for the Christmas period on 19th December 2008. The project will resume on 5th January 2009 for approximately one month.
Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland will replace the existing lights with energy efficient lanterns on both sides of the road. At present the lighting is situated up to five metres from the edge of the road on the same wooden poles used to hold the electricity cables. In line with modern standards, new aluminium columns will be erected at the heel of the footway. This column type reduces maintenance requirement.
Colin Mackenzie, Amey’s unit manager for south west Scotland said:
“The A77 is an integral part of the network, and is an arterial route for vehicles travelling every day to and from the Cairnryan and Stranraer ferry terminals. To comply with modern safety standards we are replacing the current lighting columns with new energy efficient lanterns.
“The work is scheduled during off peak hours, from 09.30am – 15.30pm, to minimise disruption. Temporary traffic lights will be in operation throughout the duration of the works. Where possible we will accommodate ferry traffic travelling through the site by removing traffic restrictions to allow quick and easy access to and from the terminal. The work will take place before and after the Christmas break which will therefore have less impact on the travelling public over the festive period.”
Amey urge drivers to take a ‘Cone Sense, Common Sense’ approach to roadworks:
Keep to the speed limit, it has been implemented for driver and workforce safety – speeding vehicles are a serious threat to staff
Concentrate on the road ahead, not the roadworks
Be alert for roadworks traffic and personnel leaving or entering the safety managed roadworks site
Keep a safe distance – there could be queues in front
Observe all signs – they are there to help you
Get into the correct lane in good time – don’t keep switching
